Janice Cashin - Chair
Janice recently retired to the Comox Valley after 30 years of teaching middle school, and serving as a vice-principal and teacher mentor. She served on School Board committees, and teacher executive, professional development and bargaining committees. She spent a year as an exchange teacher in Tokyo, Japan and organized summer programmes for visiting Japanese secondary students. Currently Janice is the Bursary Chair for the Canadian Federation of University Women, a part time student at NIC, a volunteer with the ComoxValley Therapeutic Riding Association and an ESL tutor for CALLS.
Jo Herrington - Treasurer
Jo retired to the Comox Valley from Edmonton, Alberta at the end of 2002, and joined the Board of the Community Adult Learning and Literacy Society as Treasurer in June of 2008. For 16 years she worked for the Alberta Provincial Government as a program administrator, running subsidy programmes for farmers. She is actively involved in volunteering for various groups in the Comox Valley, including the Filberg Festival, Comox Valley Seed Savers and the Comox Valley Head Injury Society.
Brenda Deakin-Director
Brenda has done a variety of things in her professional career ranging from research in the fields of biology and chemistry to teaching at a provincial college as well as counselling in a clinical capacity. She has Science degrees as well as a Master's degree in counselling. Brenda moved to Comox in 2005 after teaching in northern BC for 7 years. Brenda joined CALLS as a director in 2008.
Valerie R. Doenz-Director
Valerie began her professional life as a teacher, moved into administration as an assistant principal, was seconded by the Student Evaluation Branch of Alberta Education where she worked as an Evaluation Specialist, and then made a bit of a career change. Closely linked to her profession, Valerie sold educational software across Canada that helped students with their numeracy and literacy skills. Enjoying sales and business she worked for various companies such as Workopolis and the Calgary Herald. In November of 2009 Valerie moved to the Comox Valley and soon became involved in the community volunteering at The Views at St. Joseph's Hospital. As a new Board Member of the Adult Learning Centre Valerie is eager to help continue the success of the Centre.
Gail Hadfield-Vice Chair
Gail moved to the Comox Valley in August 2009 from Port Alberni. She works in the healthcare field as well as doing contract work with the Access Nanaimo Committee which is working towards improved accessibility and inclusion for individuals with various disabilities in Nanaimo. She is a part-time student working towards her Bachelor of Social Work degree through the University of Victoria. Because of her interest in lifelong learning and literacy, she joined CALLS as a volunteer tutor in April 2010 and, shortly thereafter, also became a Board Member.
