"I was on Worker’s Compensation due to an injury and was not able to return to the work I had been doing for many years. In order to change jobs it was necessary for me to upgrade my reading skills as I wanted to get my commercial truckers licence.
WCB referred me to the Adult Learning Centre in Courtenay. My requirements were discussed and understood and I was assigned a tutor to help me improve my reading level. As I progressed, I was also given an additional tutor to help me with the technical part of the manual that I was required to study for my exam.
I just passed my driver’s training, class two and three, and am beginning my training. I constantly read now, and pick up a book every spare moment. The whole experience has made me feel more confident and realize what I have been missing not having full reading ability. This will also improve my day-to-day life on an ongoing basis.
I find the staff at the Learning Centre to be very helpful and supportive I recommend the Adult Learning Centre to anyone needing to upgrade their skills. Don’t be ashamed. If you need help, come forward, and see the other side of reading. Stop being in the shadow, come out and learn".

"I registered for my activity assistant program at Malaspina College in September 2007. The first day of school, I was overwhelmed with my homework. The next day I came to the Adult Learning Centre and I told them I needed some help. When I saw Terry, I was happy. I met him in 2005. I told Terry what program I was taking and what I need help with. I had faith in him, and knew he would find the right tutor. At the end of September, Terry phoned me, and told me that he found the tutor and asked me to meet with her. There I met Pauline. Pauline was a teacher. She understood what I needed. From that day we were working together, once a week for 2 hours.
She really helped me, and I learned a lot, and also improved my spelling, vocabulary and writing. Without the Adult Learning Centre I would not be able to pass my program. I successfully finished the program with a higher mark. I enjoy coming to the Adult Learning Centre and continually improving my reading and writing skills. I graduated from my program on March 11th, 2008, and now have 2 jobs.
