English as a Second Language Settlement Assistance Program (ESLSAP)
The objective of our ESL Program is to provide English language skill development to adult immigrant newcomers in order to help their integration into Canadian life and our community. Trained volunteer tutors, supported by the ESL Coordinator, work on a one-to-one or small group basis in response to specific learner needs. The time commitment is approximately 2-4 hours a week. Meeting times are flexible. The Adult Learning Centre has specific learning resources for ESL tutors and learners. On-going support is provided by the ESL Coordinator, along with information sessions and workshops. This is a dynamic program with many benefits and rewards for all involved.
ESL Tutoring Services
To qualify for ESL training you must be a Canadian citizen or be a resident of the Comox Valley.
ESL tutoring is more than teaching an individual how to speak English. It is acquainting individuals with the Canadian culture and helping them integrate in into the community and to help them connect with other community resources. The Adult Learning Centre has a specific resource library for ESL learners. Tutoring is on a one on one basis and they are very flexible, often meeting learners outside of the centre and the centre’s hours. There is ongoing monitoring with the tutor and the learner by the tutor coordinator to ensure everything is going well.
Volunteers and Training for ESL
Each volunteer has a fifteen hour training session held over a five day period.
We value the contribution of our volunteers and we support their participation, by providing an initial 15 hour training, which includes a practicum through our North Island College partners and orientation to our resources and services.
